Do you struggle with combination skin?

Welcome to another article in the Beauty Diary series, where we focus on the needs of specific skin types. Today, we’ll find out how to care for combination skin. This skin type is the most common, but caring for it can be a bit more challenging. Do you have combination skin, too? Are you caring for it properly? Discover tips on how to care for combination skin so it maintains its natural balance.

What does combination skin look like?

As the name suggests, this skin type combines oily and dry or normal skin. Here’s what that looks like in practice if you have combination skin:

  • Oily areas in the T-zone: Your forehead, nose, and chin are shinier.
  • Dry areas: You feel dryness on your cheeks, temples, or around your eyes.
  • Changes throughout the day: After cleansing in the morning, your skin feels tight. By the afternoon, you notice more shine and oily areas.

Why do you have combination skin?

Genetics

  • Genetic predispositions are the primary factor influencing skin type.

Hormonal fluctuations

  • Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause. All of these changes have a significant impact on the appearance of your skin.

Environmental Factors

  • High temperatures, freezing cold, strong winds, dusty environments, as well as diet and lifestyle—all of these are culprits behind many visible skin conditions.

Inappropriately chosen skincare products

  • Products that are too thick and clog pores, or cosmetics containing poorly chosen ingredients, also affect how well your skin thrives and how it looks.

Take a Home Test

Do you know your skin type? Not sure if you might have combination skin? Try our easy and popular “tissue test.”

Cleanse your face and pat it dry gently (no rubbing).

Don’t use any creams or serums for about 60 minutes.

Then press a paper tissue or blotting paper against different parts of your face.

Wherever you see oily marks—especially in the T-zone—you likely have combination skin.

Beneficial Ingredients—The Perfect Blend

You’ll do your skin a favor by adding these nourishing ingredients to your skincare routine.

Niacinamide (B3) – Regulates sebum production, softens, and brightens the skin.

Ceramides – Have a soothing effect on tight, dry skin, help retain moisture, and regenerate the skin barrier.

Aloe vera – Hydrates the skin without weighing down the T-zone and also has soothing effects.

Hyaluronic acid – This is a well-known and proven moisturizing ingredient that provides combination skin with the moisture it needs.

Salicylic acid – Acts within the pores to dissolve sebum, thereby preventing acne in the T-zone.

Colostrum – Supports cell renewal, nourishes dry areas, and helps balance the skin’s microbiome.

ESSENS TIP

Try multi-masking. Combine different face masks for perfect results. Apply a mask suitable for oily skin to the T-zone and a moisturizing mask to the rest of your face. Or cut sheet masks to size as needed.

The 3 Most Common Mistakes in Combination Skin Care

Over-drying during cleansing – If you wash your face with alcohol-based products, paradoxically, this can trigger a reaction that actually causes your skin to produce more oil.

Using heavy creams – Under the weight of these products, your combination skin won’t be able to breathe. Pores will become more clogged, and you may develop more acne.

Ignoring the seasons – With combination skin, you need to consider the current season. It behaves slightly differently in summer and winter. It’s a good idea to slightly adjust the consistency of your products. Try switching from light summer gels or emulsions to light creams in the winter.
